Mold remediation cost, city by city

By Sam Arora, Founder & Editor · Written with reference to IICRC S520 / EPA / III guidance · Updated September 2026

Remediation is priced locally — labor rates and how far the nearest crew and equipment sit move the number more than the mold itself does. Below is every metro we cover, grouped by state, with the figures that city's own page publishes. 30 cities.

How to read these numbers — before you compare anything

Every row starts from the same national published framework: $10–$25 per square foot (HomeAdvisor) of affected material, $1,100–$3,400 for a typical professional job, and $300–$650 for an inspection with sampling where testing is warranted. Severe cases — whole-home growth, HVAC contamination, mold behind finished walls throughout — regularly reach $10,000–$30,000, and that figure is not adjusted per city. The only thing that differs between two rows below is a single cost factor.

That factor is our own editorial estimate, not a published index. It is authored at roughly state granularity and rounded to two decimals, which means the 30 cities below resolve to only 10 distinct factors — so cities sharing a factor print identical figures, in different states. It runs from ×0.85 (Jackson, MS) to ×0.97 (Grand Rapids, MI). Treat the national ranges as sourced, the local ones as our arithmetic, and an on-site assessment as the only real number.

Two things this table does not price. The EPA's rough DIY line — under about 10 square feet of visible growth is generally a careful homeowner cleanup — means the cheapest job on this page is often no job at all; the mold hub has the method. And remediation only holds if the moisture source is fixed, which is usually a plumbing or drainage bill sitting outside every range here.

Mold is almost always the second chapter of a water story. If yours started with a leak or a flood, the 24–48 hour mold clock and the water damage cost by city table cover the first chapter.
