Restoration Answers exists for one moment: when water is in your home and every other page you find is trying to sell you something. We publish honest cost ranges, plain-English insurance answers, and step-by-step emergency guidance — free, with every number traceable to a published authority.

Who runs this

The straight version of who I am: I'm Sam Arora, an independent researcher and editor. I am not a licensed contractor, plumber, or insurance adjuster, and I will never pretend to be one. What I do is read what the licensed world publishes — the IICRC S500 standard, the Insurance Information Institute, FEMA and NFIP guidance, the EPA's mold guides — and turn it into fast, plain answers with every number cited. That distance is the point: I have no truck to roll, no job to sell, and no reason to inflate a single figure.

The site is published under the studio name Lumen & Ink (Lumen & Ink is the publishing studio behind Restoration Answers). Questions, corrections, or expert contributions: use the form at /water-damage/claim, or email hello@restorationanswers.com — the mailbox accepts mail again (the server-side rejection was fixed in August 2026) and is checked nightly. The form still posts straight into our records, so it remains the fastest channel.

Our editorial standard

• Every figure is cited. Costs, timelines and coverage rules link to a named source, and here are the six we use: IICRC S500, the Insurance Information Institute, FEMA/NFIP, the EPA, HomeAdvisor and HomeGuide. If we can't source it, we don't state it as fact.
• We say what we can't know. Our tools give planning ranges, not fake instant quotes, and each one names the things only an on-site professional can determine.
• No invented reviews, no fabricated urgency, no scare tactics. Water damage is stressful enough without manufactured pressure.
• Safety guidance is referral-first. Where a step carries real physical risk (electrical, gas, structural, sewage), we tell you to stop and call a professional rather than attempt it yourself.

How this site is written and checked

1. Drafted from primary published sources. Every page starts from documents the licensed world actually publishes — standards, insurance-body guidance, government programs — not from other blogs.
2. Every figure traced to a named document. A cost range or coverage rule that can't be traced to a specific published source doesn't ship.
3. Linked on the page it appears on. Sources are cited where the claim is made, so you can check the number without hunting.
4. Re-checked quarterly. Cost data and phone numbers drift; we re-verify them on a quarterly cycle and update the “last updated” dates when we do.
5. Corrections invited. Anyone — especially licensed professionals — can flag an error, and confirmed errors are fixed and logged below.

How we're funded (so you know our incentives)

Restoration Answers is free to you and always will be. There are exactly two ways money reaches us, and both are disclosed on the page where they happen.

1. Page sponsorship. If a page here lists a restoration number, one local company pays us a flat monthly sponsorship for that page's call slot — never a fee per call, and never anything from you. If a page carries no number, nobody paid to be there. You never pay us anything, and you are always free to call any company directly instead. A sponsor buys the call slot on a page — never a mention in the cost figures, the rankings or the advice.

2. Amazon affiliate links. Some guides list equipment (a moisture meter, a wet/dry vacuum) as Amazon links. As an Amazon Associate, Restoration Answers earns from qualifying purchases — at no extra cost to you, and you are free to buy the same items anywhere else. Every block of those links carries the same disclosure above the links themselves.

Corrections & expert review

Found an error? Tell us through the form at /water-damage/claim — put “correction” in the Company field. Confirmed errors are fixed within 48 hours and logged on this page. Corrections to date: none yet.
